Lifting Black History Month Season!

Today and everyday, we lift the countless contributions African Americans have made to society. Our history is rich with those in the church, communities and the lane of learning and growth.

Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary is part of Black History. Originated in 1867 in Charlotte, North Carolina, as the Freedmen’s Institute of North Carolina. It was established by Presbyterians who believed that education was an essential antidote to the poisonous effect of slavery.

The mission of Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary is to advance communities of faith, justice, and compassion through innovation in theological education. JCSTS is one of the ten theological institutions of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and the only one that is historically African American. JCSTS offers a competency-based educational model through a digital online platform. JCSTS continues to celebrate its 155th anniversary. For more information, visit
